College in brief

The College of Sciences, founded in 2001 as part of the university’s expansion, is the scientific heart of the University of Diyala.  The college’s mission is to provide instruction by academically and practically distinguished faculty to encourage the advancement of creative scientific research in order to actively participate in nation building.  We aim to provide our students with relevant scientific expertise for modern real-world applications.

Initially, the college consisted of only the Departments of Biology and Mathematics.  Later, the Computer Sciences, Physics, and Chemistry departments were established, followed by the Department of Petroleum Geology and Minerals, and the department of Biotechnology.  The college uses the semester system in all the departments except the Chemistry department uses the annual system.  Night classes have been offered in the Biology and Chemistry departments since 2013. The college has a number of modern and sophisticated scientific laboratories as well as administrative, technical, and service units.

The postgraduate programs were developed in response to the demands of the labor market and to provide opportunities for graduates in the pure sciences to fulfill their aspirations for advanced degrees.

Postgraduate master’s programs were created in the Department of Physics for the academic year 2010-2011, and then in the Departments of Biology and Chemistry for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 academic years respectively.  The master’s in Computer Science and the Ph.D. in Physics enrolled their first classes in 2015-2016.  The master’s in Mathematics was offered in 2018-2019, and the master’s in Petroleum and Mineral Geology followed in 2020-2021.

The college has recently approved a doctoral program in the Department of Computer Science, which will begin accepting students for the 2021-2022 academic year.  The college has also started designing master’s programs in Biotechnology and Laser Physics Specialists in addition to submitting a study for the development of a doctoral program in Biological Sciences.
